Ho creato le decals a partire da immagini presenti nei forum dove ho potuto osservarle al meglio, integrandole con la documentazione personale: il frutto di questa ricerca è dunque merito anche di tutti gli appassionati che hanno messo a disposizione la documentazione che ho potuto consultare. Per la esatta contestualizzazione bisogna dire che il 5° reggimento corazzato , nerbo iniziale dell’Afrika Korps, era costituito da carri Panzer I ausf. A, Panzer II ausf. C “rilavorati” dopo le campagne di Polonia, dotati anche di cupola per il capocarro dopo la campagna di Francia: non poteva mancare il cavallo di battaglia della Panzer Waffe, il Panzer III, nelle versioni ausf. F e H, pochi e ausf. G. Nelle serie F e G il cannone da 50L42 aveva sostituito il 37L45 mm e nessuno anche fra gli H aveva ancora ricevuto piastre imbullonate di rinforzo. Modifica finale per tutte e tre le versioni i portelli motore erano stati dotati di prese d’aria protette. I 17 Panzer IV ausf. D di cui uno “ibrido” D/E chiudevano l’organico del reggimento, suddivisi nella 4° e 8° Kompanie. Discorso a parte i carri comando, i “piccoli” su scafo panzer I Ausf. B, non riprodotti e i “grandi” su panzer III, Panzerbefehlswagen, (4 in tutto, 2 di reggimento ed uno per battaglione) tutti ausf. H. Nell’insieme erano tutti carri normali in dotazione all’armata corazzata tedesca.
Va detto per inciso che durante il trasporto una decina circa di panzer III andarono distrutti nelle operazioni di carico e per questo ho pensato di dedicare due numerazioni nel caso qualcuno volesse cimentarsi nella riproduzione.
Veniamo ora alle differenze visibili per le varianti del modello G, da tenere di conto per riprodurre al meglio un modello di panzer III: le più comuni le ho riportate nell’elenco delle numerazioni offerte per ogni singolo set mentre un’altra generale riguarda il tipo di torretta che poteva essere utilizzata, visto che nella parte finale della produzione non era raro la presenza del nuovo tipo con singola piastra corazzata posteriore al posto di quella in due pezzi, caratteristica delle serie iniziali dall’ ausf. E in poi. Particolari che possono aiutare nel riconoscimento del tipo di piastra sono gli agganci laterali della “rommelkiste” alla torretta, esterno per la torretta prima serie e nascosti dietro la stessa per la successiva. Se si ha una visione laterale del carro, un’ aiuto è dato dal tipo di inclinazione della piastra laterale corazzata, diversa nella parte posteriore fra le due versioni, per la precisione più inclinata nel caso del vecchio tipo in due pezzi: se si ha la certezza di tale particolare il gioco è fatto. Concludendo si può dire che il “bordo” posteriore della piastra corazzata laterale sia quasi perpendicolare rispetto allo stesso per le versioni con doppia piastra.

Due parole sulla colorazione.
All’arrivo a Tripoli tutti i carri erano colorati in panzergrau 7021 e solo durante l’avvicinamento al fronte in parte furono mimetizzati con striature giallo sabbia sandgelb 8000, in parte con colori sabbia di probabile origine italiana, altri con una miscela di olio e sabbia applicata a caso sulle corazze, fino ad esemplari che ebbero solo lo strato di polvere onnipresente in loco. Le foto che vedrete nei forum o meglio la loro attenta osservazione saranno più che esplicative per ottenere una fedele riproduzione del modello.
I created the decals starting from images present in the forums where I was able to observe them at their best, integrating all with personal documentation: the result of this research is therefore also thanks to all the enthusiasts who have made available the documentation that I have been able to consult.
For the exact contextualization it must be said that the 5th armored regiment, initial backbone of the Afrika Korps, was made up of Panzer I ausf. A, Panzer II ausf. C “reworked” after the Polish campaigns, also equipped with a cupola for the commander after the French campaign: the “workhorse” of the Panzer Waffe, the Panzer III, in the ausf versions could not be missing: F and H, few and ausf. G. In the F and G series the 50L42 gun had replaced the 37L45 mm gun and none of the tanks, including Hs had yet received bolt-on reinforcement plates. Final modification for all three versions, the engine hatches were equipped with protected air intakes. The 17 Panzers IV ausf. D of which one “hybrid” D / E closed the regiment’s staff, divided into the 4th and 8th Kompanies. Apart from the command tanks, the “little ones” on a panzer hull I Ausf. B, not reproduced and the “big ones” on panzer III, Panzerbefehlswagen, (4 in all, 2 for regiment and one per battalion staff) all ausf. H. Taken together, they were all normal tanks supplied to the German armored army.
It must be said in passing that during the transport about ten panzer III were destroyed in the loading operations and for this reason I thought of dedicating two numbers in case someone wanted to try their hand at reproduction.
Now we come to the visible differences for the variants of the G model, to be taken into account in order to best reproduce a panzer III model: I have reported the most common in the list of numbers offered for each single set while another general one concerns the type of turret that could be used, since in the final part of the production it was not uncommon the presence of the new type with single rear armored plate instead of the two-piece one, characteristic of the initial series from ausf. E and onwards. Details that can help in recognizing the type of plate are the lateral hooks of the “rommelkiste” to the turret, external for the first series and hidden behind it for the next. If you have a side view of the tank, an aid is given by the type of inclination of the armored side plate, which is different in the rear part between the two versions, to be more inclined in the case of the old two-piece type: if you have the certainty of this detail the game is done. In conclusion, it can be said that the rear “edge” of the side armored plate is almost perpendicular to it for the versions with double plate.
Few words about colours.
Upon arrival in Tripoli all the tanks were colored in panzergrau 7021 and only during the approach to the front were they partly camouflaged with sandgelb 8000 sand-yellow streaks, partly with sand colors of probable Italian origin, others with a mixture of oil and sand applied at random on the armor, up to specimens that had only the omnipresent layer of dust on site.

Salve a tutti, finalmente posso dire di avere concluso la mia lunga ricerca finalizzata alla ricostruzione storica dell’organigramma del 5 panzer regimet in Africa settentrionale per la riproduzione modellistica di decals in scala 1:35 per i numeri tattici presenti sui carri al loro sbarco a Tripoli. Di seguito l’anteprima del mio lavoro che spero possa piacervi e di cui prossimamente realizzerò una piccola limitata produzione al fine di poterla condividere con tutti gli appassionati del teatro africano. Hi guys, I can finally say that I have concluded my long research aimed at the historical reconstruction of the organization of the 5 Panzer Regimet in North Africa, 1941, for the reproduction of 1:35 scale decals of some of the tactical numbers for the tanks to their landing in Tripoli. I would have thought of six different sets which in their totality can give an almost total representation of the tanks present, from panzer I to panzer IV passing from command tanks on panzer III hull. Below is a preview of my work which I hope you will enjoy and of which I will soon make a small limited production in order to be able to share it with all fans of African theater.
